IL State Dental Society Statement on Allegations of Racism in Dental Education

The Illinois State Dental Society, representing dentists and dental practices on public policy issues for more than 150 years, today issued the following statement in light of recent allegations of racism in education at the University of Illinois-Chicago’s College of Dentistry:

For Immediate Release:

ISDS promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout our society. The ISDS House of Delegates, the chief governing body of the ISDS membership, in September 2022 adopted a statewide policy on diversity, equity, and inclusion and established a permanent DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) committee made up of member dentists of the society. The committee will lead DEI efforts and provide leadership training and mentorship opportunities for minorities in the dental industry.

The ISDS Policy Statement on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is clear and unmistakable:

  • ISDS welcomes diversity and stands against all forms of racism, discrimination, and bias in our dental society and the population we serve. We advocate on behalf of our patients and profession. ISDS provides the tools for our members to excel and succeed. Our members work to ensure Illinoisans receive optimal oral care.
  • Success can be achieved only with all its members’ participation, inclusion, and engagement, from all backgrounds and talents. Our goal is possible only if we welcome and celebrate diversity and ensure equity amongst members.

We stand ready as a society, through our dedicated team in Springfield and our members throughout the state, to work closely with legislators and policymakers at all levels of government to promote a welcoming, diverse culture and to fight hatred and intolerance in our workplaces and our public policy.
