Controlled Substance License Holders: It is required to register with the PMP!

Recently, the Illinois Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) sent reminders to prescribers, including dentists, who hold a controlled substance license to remind them that state law requires registration with the PMP.

If you are a controlled substance license holder and you have NOT registered with the PMP, you will need to register.

To register:
1.)   Go to
2.)   Click Register for an Account
3.)   Click ILPMP Website Registration
4.)   Click Prescriber/Resident
5.)   Follow the Registration steps

If You Already Registered
If you have previously registered with the PMP, you will need to ensure that your information is current in the system. You will need to log into to review and verify your information. The system will require a verification of information every two years.

What is the PMP?
The PMP is a website that allows prescribers and pharmacists to view a patient’s prescription history.  The PMP provides prescription information for Schedules II-V controlled substances.

PMP Registration Requirement
In 2018, Illinois passed a law that requires all prescribers who hold a controlled substance license to register with the PMP. This requirement includes dentists.

Requirement to Check the PMP
Additionally, prescribers (or their designee) are required to document an attempt to access patient information in the PMP to assess patient access to controlled substances when providing an initial prescription for Schedule II narcotics, such as opioids.
