Continuing education is mandatory in the state of Illinois for licensed dentists and dental hygienists. The Rules administering the Dental Practice Act explain in detail all the requirements for continuing education hours and approved sponsors of continuing education.
CE offered by ISDS is accepted by IDFPR in Illinois for licensure renewal. A recent concern was brought to the ISDS Education committee, as well as the ISDS board about CERP accreditation. ISDS is not CERP recognized as we no longer participate in the program. Our board agreed that CERP accreditation is not worthwhile as it is a cumbersome and costly process.
Components of ISDS can apply for the accreditation if they feel it is worthwhile. Components, like the Chicago Dental Society, utilize the accreditation as many out of state individuals attend the Midwinter meeting and because they live outside of the state of Illinois, they would need it to apply to their state’s requirements for CE.
