Update on Continuing Education (CE) Requirements * 2021 License Renewal
The ISDS is aware and monitoring the situation involving two areas related to CE requirements for license renewal. The first is the problem with certification for Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Professionals which is a requirement under the Illinois Dental Practice Act for licensure. If this continues to be an issue for our members, and they cannot take the course to get certified, we plan on requesting a variance from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) that would waive that requirement for the upcoming 2021 license renewal year.
The second issue is the inability to hold in-person CE courses by both components and branches during this time of social distancing. According to the rules, there are two alternatives to in-person courses. The first is individual study courses, both audio and video that are conducted by an approved sponsor, however, this is limited to 50% of the total 48 hour requirement. The other avenue is teleconferencing courses, with a moderator present, also given by an approved sponsor. In our opinion, live webinars and Zoom presentations are acceptable examples as long as the requirements for verified attendance and other information required for an in-person CE course are provided to attendees. Removing the restriction of 50% on correspondence courses may also be a variance request to the IDFPR if the Covid-19 restrictions continue into 2021.
The ISDS will keep your informed as these issues continue to develop.
