This eight-hour course is designed for dental assistants who already possess fundamental skills in dental radiography.  The course will be structured such that the participant, upon completion, should reveal a refinement of existing radiographic skills, as well as the ability to satisfactorily demonstrate newly acquired ones.  The participant will have the opportunity for clinical participation, including the exposure of representative radiographs on mannequins.  The long cone paralleling technique using the X-C-P film holding instrument for intraoral periapical and bitewing radiography will be reviewed and demonstrated.  The participant will have the opportunity to refine this technique in the clinical setting using adult and pediatric mannequins.  Intraoral techniques using the bisecting-angle principle, including the demonstration of various film holding devises, will also be presented.  Specific applications of the bisecting angle technique for endodontic and pediatric radiography will be demonstrated.  Practical occlusal radiographic techniques for the adult and pediatric patient will be introduced.  Selection criteria for determining the extent and frequency of radiographic examinations will be discussed as it applies to today’s radiographic requirements.  Radiographic film assessment criteria will be presented.  Practical concepts of film processing and duplication will be given.
