Due to high demand, we have added another Anesthesia Sedation class to the SIU roster. The course will be held on June 25th and 26th at the SIU campus in Alton, IL. Space is limited to 15 students, so please register early.

Anesthesia/Sedation Assistant Monitoring 

Clinical Certification Course for Dental Auxiliary
Target Audience: Dental Assistants & Dental Hygienists
Registration for this course ends two weeks prior to the course start date.

Prerequisite:  Must be currently certified in BLS for healthcare providers or its equivalent.  A copy of your current BLS card must accompany registration form. The Illinois State Dental Society is an approved provider of continuing education in the State of Illinois.  Illinois dental hygienists will earn 12 continuing education credits when completing this course. In accordance with Section 1220.245 of the Rules for the Administration of the Dental Practice Act of the State of Illinois, a dental assistant must be at least 18 years of age and has 1,000 hours of clinical dental assisting experience or has graduated from a dental assisting program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association, or is a currently certified dental assistant as designated by the Dental Assisting National Board, Inc. to perform the task of Anesthesia/Sedation Monitoring.

This course is offered as a continuing education experience for dental auxiliary who work in dental or oral surgery offices in the State of Illinois where sedation or general anesthesia is administered.  The course is designed to meet the requirements of the Illinois Dental Practice Act and the Rules Administering the Dental Practice Act.  This course includes both lecture and clinical exposure which is completed at one of the two dental schools in Illinois.  A certificate of completion will be issued upon course completion.

Course Objectives and Competencies:

  • Become familiar with the anatomy and physiology involved with monitoring and airway maintenance in the sedated dental patient.
  • Obtain a basic understanding of the physiology of the respiratory, cardiovascular and neurological systems as they relate to anesthesia and sedation.
  • Become familiar with the health questionnaire and its application for the evaluation of the patient undergoing anesthesia/sedation and be able to link this information to the ASA classification.
  • Develop an understanding of the levels of sedation/anesthesia and be able to recognize these levels in the patient under dental sedation.
  • Acquire the skills required for monitoring the sedated patient, including monitoring of blood pressure, pulse, respirations temperature and level of consciousness.
  • Learn to operate automated monitoring devices including the EKG and pulse-oximeter.
  • Learn to complete the anesthesia record and make appropriate monitoring entries during the procedure and during recovery.
  • Learn basic management protocols for anesthesia related emergencies and become more competent in assisting the dentist in their management.
