Membership Categories

Below are the qualifications, privileges and dues of the dentist membership categories in the Illinois State Dental Society.

Active Member

A dentist licensed to practice in Illinois who is a member in good standing of the Illinois State Dental Society, of one of its component societies, and of the American Dental Association, is classified as an Active member.

Active members in good standing are eligible for election or appointment to any office, committee, council or similar position in ISDS. Active members also receive the Illinois Dental News, are entitled to admission to any ISDS scientific session and may participate in other Society member services and programs.

APPLICATION

Life Member

Life membership in the Illinois State Dental Society is a commendable achievement for many of our dedicated members. An ISDS Life member is classified as:

  • Any active or retired member in good standing who has maintained 30 consecutive years or a total of 40 non-consecutive years of active and/or retired membership and has attained the age of 65, or
  • Any life member of the American Dental Association who is an active member in good standing of ISDS.

Life membership becomes effective the calendar year immediately following the year in which the requirements are fulfilled.

Retired Member

To qualify for Retired Member status, an active member must meet two criteria:

  • Be a member in good standing, and
  • No longer earn income from the performance of services as a member of the faculty of a dental school, or as a dental administrator or consultant, or as a practitioner of any activity for which a license to practice dentistry is required.

Provisional Member

A dentist with a degree from a dental school accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the American Dental Association, who is actively seeking a position in dentistry, is eligible for Provisional member status. To qualify, a dentist must apply for this category of membership within 12 months of graduation. Provisional membership will terminate on December 31 of the second full calendar year following the year in which the degree was awarded.

Provisional membership is a direct membership category that provides a means for recent graduates who have not yet established a place of practice that enables them to maintain membership in ISDS and ADA. By becoming a provisional member, a dentist maintains his or her eligibility for reduced dues for recent graduates.

A Provisional member is entitled to admission to any ISDS scientific session, participation group insurance programs, a subscription to the Illinois Dental News, and other member benefits and services provided by ISDS.

APPLICATION

Associate Member

An active or life member of any constituent society of the American Dental Association, other than the Illinois State Dental Society, or an ethical dentist practicing in any country other than the United States who is a member of a recognized dental organization in such country, is eligible for Associate membership when so classified by a component society of the Illinois State Dental Society.

An Associate member in good standing receives an associate membership card. Associate members will receive the Illinois Dental News upon payment of the annual subscription rate. An Associate member is also entitled to admission to any ISDS scientific session, participation in the group insurance programs of the Society, and other member benefits and services provided by ISDS.

APPLICATION

New Graduate

On a one-time basis, the dentist, when awarded a DDS or DMD, is exempt from payment of active member dues for the balance of the year of graduation and for the first full calendar year following the year in which the degree was awarded. In the second year, the new graduate pays 33% of active dues, 66% in the third year, and 100% in the fourth year and thereafter.

The dentist who is engaged full-time in an accredited internship, residency or graduate work program is eligible to pay the same dues as a student member. Upon completion of the program, the dentist will pay dues for active members at the next period-in-time level that is applicable.
