State Fair Smile Contest

The Illinois State Dental Society will hold its 25th Annual Smile Contest on Friday, August 20, 2010 in the Special Events Tent at the Illinois State Fair. Contact Gloria Pitchford in the ISDS Communications department for details. Registration begins at 12:30, and the competition starts promptly at 1:30.

Since 1986, hundreds of children have polished off cotton candy, corn dogs, and lemon shake-ups in time to enter the Illinois State Dental Society’s Annual State Fair Smile contest. Each year, over 200 kids ages 5-15 descend upon the Special Events Tent to participate. Every contestant walks away a winner with a “Smile Kit” containing dental health information, toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and sugarless goodies. Finalists receive cash prizes and t-shirts. ISDS mascot Flossie greets the kids and loves to have her picture taken with all those smiling faces.

Contestants are judged by a panel of ISDS dentists and dental hygienists on overall presentation, personal appeal, and the sparkle of their smiles. There’s also a special “Tin Grins” category for kids with braces.
