Originating in Virginia and spreading throughout the United States, more than 50 Mission of Mercy (MOM) dental programs have been conducted since 2000 to provide free dental care to local residents who otherwise were unable to receive treatment.
The Illinois State Dental Society (ISDS) and its Foundation will host their first MOM event at the Interstate Center in Bloomington, IL, in June 2010 utilizing 90 portable dental units. We expect to deliver approximately $900,000 in free care to 1,500 patients, both children and adults.
Below is a 10-minute video of the 2009 WDA Mission of Mercy that features interviews with volunteers, patients, government officials and major donors. Our event will be very similar.
A successful MOM event focuses on:
Providing free access to dental care while placing a high priority on patients suffering
from dental infections or pain.
Raising public awareness of the increasing difficulty low-income adults and children face
in accessing critical dental care.
Challenging Medicaid patients, policymakers and dental professionals to work together to improve the oral health of those who have been promised care by the state.
The emphasis will be on basic dental care such as fillings, extractions and cleanings.
Limited lab work (e.g., treatment partials) will be offered. The program is unable to treat patients with specific medically-compromising conditions (e.g., extremely high blood
pressure, severe disabilities).
We recognize that, as an association, we cannot do it alone.
We need the help of more than 600 individual volunteer dentists, dental hygienists and assistants, lab technicians and lay persons from across Illinois to donate their time and talents.
We need the help of collaborating organizations, such as local dental societies, specialty
groups, dental schools, dental hygiene schools, local and statewide corporations, dental
supply companies and charitable foundations.
In addition to time donated by individuals, we also need financial support. Tax-deductible
financial donations and in-kind contributions may be made through the ISDS Foundation to
help cover $180,000 in dental equipment and facility rental, supplies, pharmaceuticals and
food costs for this four-day charitable care event.
MOM events deliver, on average, $5 to $7 in critically-needed dental care for every donor dollar received. Please consider this in your donor decision process.
